Maybe you are blogging or keeping a diary but would like more readers for your stories…? Maybe you comment actively on Indian events on social networking sites but hoped your thoughts would get a wider audience? Or maybe you are already taking awesome photos around Mumbai and are hoping they will get published one day?

Well, here’s your big chance. India is full of stories people back home are eager to read. Foreign newspapers, magazines, online publications are constantly looking for interesting stories from India. Travel magazines and daily newspapers alike are starved of content from this colourful country. Pia Heikkila will tell you how to take those first steps in your freelance career.

Content: ‘Freelance writing & photography’ – is divided into three units and each unit lasts two hours.

Unit 1 – Your story as a vehicle What is a story and how to tell it well. How to find a story. The importance of good writing.

Unit 2 – Your story as a business How to pitch a story or photo. Who to pitch and how to find the right people. What stories sell from India. News/features/blogs/books/photos – the importance of getting your format right.

Unit 3 – Your story as a calling card Importance of getting your first byline. How to get visibility for your work. Freelance journalism as a career – the next step.

Who is it for: It is suitable for anyone who is interested in telling stories from amazing India, in any language. It will also help those who are keen photographers and would like to sell their shots.

Why Me?

The workshop is taught by award winning journalist and author Pia Heikkila. Pia has worked for CNN and Al Jazeera, reporting from conflicts in countries as diverse as Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine. She has has been a freelance journalist in Afghanistan and India since 2008. Operation Lipstick, mission of Mr.Right, is her debut novel.
